What if I told you, as a competitive athlete that’s on track or is in college playing your sport, that you already have everything it takes to make your wildest dreams come true? Whether it’s playing professionally, achieving a certain lifestyle, becoming the leader you always wanted to be, or even finding the man or woman of your dreams, you are someone I would bet on to make it happen, IF you applied this one simple practice.
The reason I’m willing to make such a bold statement, that you could achieve anything you wanted in life, isn’t because I have blind faith, it’s because you’ve already demonstrated you have what it takes to achieve a goal through grit, perseverance, consistency, and determination. But as you know, you didn’t get where you are today because it just fell into your lap. You got here because you had laser focus on this one objective, to play college athletics.
Which brings me back to the practice I was referring to earlier. This practice is so simple, and so easy, yet hardly anyone does it. But then again, how many people do you know are out achieving their wildest dreams….? The practice I’m referring to is writing down your goals and revisiting them daily. And while at first glance, this might seem cliché and menial, hear me out, because there’s actually many layers to this.
It Gives Clarity
Being able to quiet the noise of the world, and simply listen to your inner voice is skill. And it’s THE skill that will allow you to end up exactly where you’re supposed to be. I see young adults making choices that don’t align with anything they say they want all the time. To me, that means they are not crystal clear and confident in what they actually want. My choices aren’t influenced by the outside world because I know who I am and where I want to go. But that’s only because I’ve taken the time to self reflect, ask myself the right questions, and clearly articulate what I want in writing.
Provides Perspective
One of my favorite quotes is, “You’ll always find what you’re looking for,” which highlights the power of perspective and intention. What you focus on is what you find, positive or negative. When you write your goals down, and review them daily they remain at the forefront of your mind. This is important because this will be the lens you see the world through, and will make the micro-decisions each day very clear. You’re either making choices that align with your goals and what you want, or you’re not.
Enables Momentum
I’m a big “move the needle 1% a day” kind of girl. Unfortunately, when the needles only moving 1% it often feels like it’s not moving at all, which isn’t exactly motivating. But being able to visually see, and pinpoint that I’m taking actions towards achieving my goals has helped me tremendously. Instead of looking back on the day and feeling like I didn’t do enough, I’m able to recognize the small victories, and feel as if I’ve won the day. This is what propels me to keep chipping away one day at a time. As humans we feel our best when we feel like we’re progressing, and that’s exactly what keeping track of these small wins does.
If you’d like to dive deeper into this, I give more specific guidance in my custom 6-week training plans that gets you really thinking about what you want out of life, who you want to become, and how you can start chipping away at that each day. The point is to keep those goals in your constant sights, and to continue moving in that direction. You won’t see the results overnight, but in time you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come.
